The Marche region is not just a land of rolling hills and stunning coastlines, but a historic open-air theater for competitive cycling.
Its challenging roads, especially during the renowned “Race of the Two Seas” (Tirreno-Adriatico), have forged legends and dramatically altered destinies. A poignant example is the 1971 edition during the Pineto-Civitanova Marche stage. While trying to attack his rival Italo Zilioli on a climb, champion Michele Dancelli suffered a devastating crash, fracturing his femur.
That unforgiving asphalt permanently changed his professional trajectory, stripping him of the ability to push heavy gears uphill and forcing a premature decline before he even turned 32. This striking piece of sporting history perfectly illustrates how racing in this Italian territory has always blended breathtaking beauty with unforgiving physical sacrifice.
